In the year 2035, technology and robots are a trusted part of everyday life. In this film, that trust is broken and only one man, alone against the system, sees it coming. I, ROBOT employs spectacular visual effects innovations beyond any ever before put on screen to bring a world of robots to life. The character of Sonny, a special robot who holds the key to a murder – and perhaps the survival of the human race – represents the cutting edge in photorealism. Indeed, Sonny is the most realistic, emotionally complete, three-dimensional CGI character ever created on film.
2035年，機械人已發展成人類的夥伴，數量以倍數增長，平均每五個人就擁有一個機械人。美國US Robotics最新推出機械人NS5，以強化耐久鈦金屬製成，無論是清潔家居、送貨、照顧小孩等家中雜務都能一手包辦。為使機械人永遠成為人類的奴隸，人類在NS5的電腦精片上寫下三大規條約章：不得傷害人類；必須服從人類命令；在不違反前二條約章下可享有生存權利。
人類與機械人，主人與奴隸，兩者互不相干，和平相處。直至一日，有消息指發明機械人NS5的創造者突然遭到NS5殺害，人類對機械人的信任關係頓時破裂。從來不相信機械人的芝加哥探員（韋史密夫飾演）肩負緝兇職責，與崇尚科學的機械人心理學家（碧姬蒙娜漢飾演）合作調查真相。芝加哥探員懷疑兇手有可能是一個名叫辛尼Sonny的機械人，但心理學家卻不表認同；各持己見的二人最後沒料到機械人的智慧遠遠超乎他們想像…… |
