每年，我們製造出大量的垃圾，垃圾車的車龍長達由地球到月球的一半路程。排山倒海的廢物叫城市規劃者大傷腦筋。到2050年，《未來之都》數以百萬計的人口將會產生超過今日兩倍的垃圾。焚燒或堆填並非持久的方案，此舉可會釀成有毒物質洩漏及釋放較二氧化碳差23倍的溫室效應氣體。
面對著這龐大的問題及其對地球資源的耗損，《未來之都》要怎樣才能夠應付其每日生產出來的十萬噸垃圾？Dan Kammen教授提出四個方法：氣態等離子能量、生物炭肥料、興建一個堆填島，以及sewage heating。

近年來環境的變化讓人們感到恐懼，各地平均氣溫明顯上升，廢氣與污水排放過多，不難想像甚麼時候會發生世界末日？到2050年，估計汽車、飛機等會排放出12千兆噸二氧化碳，想想對大氣層的影響有多嚴峻！
第二集的《未來之都2050》，Dan Kammen教授等科學家研究如何讓汽車減少排放二氧化碳，並提出四個新解決辦法：海藻生物柴油、燃料電池車、電子車及翼身合一飛機，為我們未來而戰。

Today, food travels 1,500 miles on average to reach consumers. By 2050, food will have to travel even farther to cities – amassing more and more carbon emissions – and water will be in short supply. Plus, the meat and dairy industries will continue to put a strain on the environment by producing dangerous methane emissions.
