Even Designers Get the Blues
26 Apr 2008 at 08:30p.m.

Fifteen talented fashion designers compete for an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to show at world-renown Bryant Park during New York's Fashion Week and 100,000 dollars to make their line a reality. The challenge is to create an iconic denim look using Levi's 501s and cotton as raw materials.

Icon, in modern popular culture, is known as a representative symbol of something. That something is legendary Levis Strauss and Co., makers of the world's first blue jean. These remaining designers must create a timeless ensemble from Levi's classic denim that will inspire future generations of denim lovers and fashionistas.

The budget for this challenge is unlimited Levi denim and cotton material. The deadline? Midnight. It is a race against the clock as these remaining designers have less than ten hours to construct their look from sketch to model. They must quickly create a story over their sketchpads and avoid the “overly ambitious” and “too complicated” traps.

From a denim wedding dress to a futuristic trench coat to an edgy biker jacket and jeans to a cocktail dress, each designer brings their personal story to fruition and with a ton of flair. With only a few more challenges remaining Bryant Park is closer than ever. The word icon not only can inspire generations but also these seven remaining designers as they go for broke and elevate denim, as we know it, into something magical, original, and immortal.

En Garde
19 Apr 2008 at 08:30p.m.

Fifteen talented fashion designers compete for an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to show at world-renown Bryant Park during New York's Fashion Week and 100,000 dollars to make their line a reality. The challenge is to create an avant-garde look inspired by the dramatic hairstyle of the model.

Avant-garde in fashion is synonymous with ambitious, experimental, and innovative. It is a style that does not suit every designer. So, for this challenge they are divided in tandems and allocated a 300-dollar budget and two days to complete their look. Designing duos hunch over their sketchpads and spin yarns and motifs for their avant-garde look, which range from punk girl meets equestrian, Scarlett O’hara in ‘Gone with the Wind,’ and Victorian high fashion.
Teams, immediately in a time crunch with these complicated looks, get a big surprise when Tim Gunn announces they must also design a second ready-to-wear look that embodies the essence of the avant-garde piece. And the stress level shoots through the roof as tandems are thrown off schedule and must scramble to conceptualize and construct a second look that will compliment and be sellable.
From apocalyptic trench coats to giant neckpieces to dresses made of fifty yards of organza, these designers are up for the challenge. However, discrepancies in taste and style, pressure, tempo, and ego have teams in a quandary as the final hour nears. It comes down to the winning formula of team chemistry, vision, and the crafting of a jaw-dropping piece that will turn the fashion world on its ear.

Fifteen talented fashion designers compete for an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to show at world-renown Bryant Park during New York's Fashion Week and 100,000 dollars to make their line a reality. The challenge is to create a prom dress for discriminating young clients from Saint John high school.

Heidi tells the designers they will be creating an outfit for one of the most important days in a women's life and that it will be one that will create memories. The designers soon learn that the very important day Heidi was referring to was the prom and the outfit is the prom dress. The designers are instructed to listen to their teen clients in regards to their design while still remaining their point of view as a designer.
